The northern and southern states of the union were developed along different lines. The South had a predominately agrarian economy while the north dealt with industry and commerce. As a result of this they had different cultures and political beliefs, which led to many disagreements and conflicts between the states. Many events occurred as a result of this conflict. These events caused the southern states to secede from the Union and ultimately led to the Civil War. The Civil War was the bloodiest battle recorded in American history. It caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries. As a result of this anti-slavery movements and abolitionists started to grow in numbers, and rebellions and resistance against slavery started to occur. Many had started to realize that the Union would not succeed in being half free and half oppressed. â€Å"A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved, I do not expect the house to fall, but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It is believed that the Compromise of 1850 also played a part in the secession of the southern states. The job of the Compromise of 1850 was to hold the now divided union together with a set of laws dealing with the issue of slavery. Some of these laws were that California entered the union as a free state, that Utah and New Mexico were to use popular authority to decide whether or not slavery should be permitted within its boundaries, the slave trade becoming illegal in the District of Colombia and a stricter fugitive slave

The balance between calories-in and calories-out differs for each person. Furthermore, several endocrine abnormalities are reported in obesity. Some of these abnormalities are considered as contributory factors for the development of obesity, whereas others are considered to be secondary effects of obesity and usually are restored after weight loss. Thyroid hormones usually are normal in obesity, with the exception of T3 which is elevated. Prolactin is normal but prolactin response to different stimuli is dulled. GH is low and GH response to stimuli is dulled. IGF-I levels are normal or elevated. Cortisol, ACTH, and urine free cortisol levels are usually normal; however, a hyperresponsiveness of the HPA axis with increased cortisol and ACTH response to stimulatory tests is observed in extremely obese individuals. Obesity is connected with an increased risk of a number of diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, stroke and several types of cancer, and with decreased longevity and lower quality of life. Daniel was one of the greatest orators and debaters of his time, he fought congress, and fought for what he believed in, from the beginning of his career, and till the very end, whether he succeeded, failed, or if made a mistake he redeemed himself. After the French and Indian War, Ebenezer Webster wanted to return to his native town, get married and live off the land in Salisbury, New Hampshire. After settling there for ten years, in 1774, his first spouse Mehetable Smith died, but gave him five children in the span of those years. He then married another woman by the name of Abigail Eastman, she also gave birth to five children. The fourth child of Abigail, Daniel, born on January 18, 1782; as an infant he looked unhealthy and delicate, they weren’t sure if he was going to live. He was very fragile so he had an exception that he didn’t have to work as hard as his other siblings. He burst in to tears; his antipathy to public declamation appeared insurmountable, and neither frowns nor smilies could overcome the reluctance. It was overcome, for when young Webster felt the power which was in him, he boldly employed it. At first, however, he was a failure as a public speaker. With all this, he went forward in the acquisition of knowledge and the bracing of his mind; and in his fifteenth year he once undertook to repeat five hundred lines of Virgil, if his teacher would consent to listen. As an early teenager, he helped as an extra helper in a local lawyer’s office. What he got out of working at a lawyers office was that he picked up a good amount of the Latin language, and grammar, by regularly trying to attempt memorizing the material. The lawyer was insistent that he needs to further on his education, because not only did he feel that he had a gift of acquiring knowledge, and that he had a great mind, but others that knew him did as well. In 1794, Ebenezer took Daniel to his first day at Phillips Exeter Academy; his fellow classmates laughed at Daniel, because of the way he dressed and by the way he talked. When there are people who live in a completely different environment such as the country, and then transfer to going to school where these people who are from the city would’t normally see a farm boy such as Daniel Webster, he was criticized by his classmates, because he wasn’t like everyone else and, Daniel didn’t appreciate the criticism. He studied there at Phillips Exeter Academy for nine months, and dropped out because his family was suffering from financial problems. At age fifteen, he started teaching at a near by school house. The minister at Boscawen recognized young Daniel’s talents and saw him to be an individual who was in need of a college education. Dr. Samuel Wood tried to prepare him for college by teaching him Latin, and another individual tutored him in Greek, so he might have a good chance to be admitted into Dartmouth College in 1797. 2]â€Å"Dartmouth was actually a large and flourishing institution, numbering nearly a hundred and fifty students and graduating larger classes than any of its contemporaries except Harvard†(Current, 6). While in school he read all the English literature he could put his hands on, and he remembered the literature he read. While at Dartmouth College, he learned an abundant amount of history and learned about great Latin authors and strengthened his knowledg e of the Latin Language. During his college days he greater developed his gift of being a great orator. [3]â€Å"Without his forceful and instinct for the confusions and cohesions of the law, without illuminating wit and metaphors and the resounding symbolism oratory, without his truly great contributions at the bar, the epochal opinions of the Court might have been very different from what they were† (Baxter, 1). He loved to speak, he practiced off hand speaking but usually prepared himself for a speech by mediating on the certain subject and making notes. He was known for entering into a classroom and start off his speech in a low voice as if it were a sleepy manner, then would he would slowly raise his voice to be a very strong and commanding voice. He had a way that he presented his words to his audience, he would have his listeners completely under control and he could persuade them quite easily. After getting his degree from Dartmouth College in 1801, he returned to Salisbury, NH, where he began to study law and more English literature, and when he found some spare time he would fish and hunt. He was later that year offered job as a schoolmaster in the town of Fryeburg, Maine. He was an excellent teacher, because he showed perfect dignity, level temper, and imperturbable composure, which made his students respect him. He continued to resume his law studies, resigned at the academy in Fryeburg, and took a the initiative to take the trip to Boston to introduce himself to a one of the most respected lawyers in the Boston area, his name was Christopher Gore. Dartmouth College was hardly established before the disputes between John Wheelock and the college’s board of trustees went into a debate that nearly threatened the college. Convinced by President Wheelock, Governor of Plumer, New Hampshire. The state legislature passed measures to put aside the board of trustees and to rename the institution Dartmouth University. They refused to be frightened, and the former board of trustees carried on to operate Dartmouth College along side with the university until the disagreement was settled ultimately by legal action in the presence of the Supreme Court, and Daniel Webster stood for the College. To get a better understanding into the cause of the case of Dartmouth v. Woodward shows the real significance of the decision brought down by the Supreme Court. The New Hampshire legislature was convinced that since the majority of the funds to run the college were from the public branch, the college should be a University and for that reason a public institution. The Supreme Courts decision to respect the original charter as landmark since it is an example that even though the money for an institution may be from public money, it is not automatically considered a public learning institution. The Supreme Court suggested that the controlling factor regarding an institution is public or isn’t, would be made up of whom ever is in charge of it and isn’t where the money is from. The decision passed on by Chief Justice Marshall on February, 1819, to help protect the original charter making it free of meddling from the state, and this was one of the most important announcements on the academic freedom of private institutions to occur in American law. In 1819, the state of Maryland approved a law imposing a tax on all banks operating in Maryland not chartered by the state. 4]â€Å"Vetoing the bill, Jackson sent it back to Congress with a message in which he condemned the bank as constitutional, undemocratic, and un-American. Though Webster and Marshall long since had asserted its constitutionality in the case of McCulloch v. Maryland. Jackson insisted that the president had as much right and duty to interpret the constitution as did the Supreme Court† (Curren t, 77). The law brought forth that all banks were prohibited from sending out bank notes except upon stamped paper sent by the state. The law brought the fees to be paid for the paper and established penalties for violations. McCulloch, the cashier of the Baltimore branch of the Bank of the United States, issued bank notes without complying with the Maryland law. The state of Maryland sued McCulloch for failing to pay the taxes, under the Maryland law and McCulloch contested the constitutionality of that act. The state court found for Maryland and McCulloch appealed. In the Massachusetts convention of 1820, Daniel Webster took a stand for the removal of religious tests for the holders of office, and in a speech in favor of the feature of property representation in the senate he studied the heory and the practice of bicameral legislation. [5]â€Å"On the 22nd of December, 1820, he delivered at Plymouth the oration which commemorated the two-hundredth anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims†(Lodge, 2). Webster was invited by the Plymouth Society to speak in their celebration of the Mayflower’s landing at Plymouth. Daniel Webster’s famous Plymouth Oration did much establish to the Pil grims as the forebear’s of America. In 1823, Ogden brought this lawsuit seeking an order to restrain Gibbons from running the steam ships on New York waters in violation of his exclusive privilege. 6]â€Å"The origins of the Gibbons case are traceable to the time when Americans were developing the steamboat as means of transportation. In order to encourage this form of navigation, the New York legislature enacted several statutes granting an exclusive right to Robert R. Livingston and Robert Fulton or their assignees to operate steamboats on the states waters† (Baxter, 196). Ogden was granted the order and Gibbons appealed, declaring that his steamships were licensed under the act of congress. Gibbons declared that the act of congress replaced the exclusive privilege granted by the state of New York. The chancellor declared the order, holding that the New York law granting the exclusive privilege was not repulsive to the Constitution and laws of the United States. Gibbons appealed and the decision was declared by the court for the trial of impeachments and correction of errors. In 1822, he got nominated into Congress from the Boston district in 1822, and he was twice reelected by a popular vote that was almost unanimous. In 1823, he took his congressional seat, and in the same year, the Speaker of the House, Henry Clay, appointed him chairman of the judiciary committee. He held a commanding and influential position in Washington. He presented his views on the public questions and showed great capacity for practical legislation. While he was in congress he had two recognized speeches. Daniel Webster took a stand on January 19, 1824, to offer a resolution in favor of suppling by law for the expenses incident to the appointment of a commissioner to Greece. The Greeks were then in the struggle of revolution, and the sympathy for the heirs in their strive for freedom was strong among the American people. He then delivered a speech on 1-2 April, 1824, on the bill that was introduced to congress to revise the tariff, and to extend the operation of the protective system. In 1827, Daniel Webster was elected to the United States senate. [7]â€Å"He was a Senator Webster now, in 1827. Within the next six years he was to win the brightest of all his honors in the never-ending tourney of political debate. †(Current, 47) In 1828, the US Congress passed the first import Tariff, a protective tax. The tariff increased the cost of imported goods, and aas a result protected some of the new industries of the North. The South, whose economy was based on the export of the cotton did not manufacture significant products opposed the tariff. [8]â€Å"A tariff must protect America against the pauper labor of Europe. Shifting to the slavery question, he spiritedly attacked expansionists now crying for the annexation of Texas. He objected on both moral and constitutional grounds to taking more slave states into the Union. As usual, he conceded that congress could not abolish slavery in the states in which it already existed†(Baxter, 256). Webster on January 19, 1830, confronted Haynes state rights theme and was successful in changing the debate from the narrow issues of the tariff and public land policy to the more vast concerns of slavery and the essence of the union. Acknowledging the Wests problem with slavery; Hayne accused that the North was trying to destroy the South through its recent change to high protective tariffs and its ever more vocal objection to slavery. He attacked Daniel Websters inconsistency on the tariff and helped his listeners to remember that the doctrine of nullification included among its supporters of Madison and Jefferson, as well as Webster, and those in New England who was in the support of the Hartford Convention during the war in 1812. On January 21, 1828, his wife Grace Fletcher died, and he lost his brother Ezequiel in April 10, 1829, which was only a years span of each family member’s death. He was hurt because he loved these two people very much. Towards the end of the year of 1829, he marries Caroline Le Roy. Webster and Jackson were on good terms and were allies, but it wasn’t so when they discussed their views on maintaining the Union. Webster was one who publicly supported a protective tariff, internal improvements, and the national bank. Jackson and Webster had too many different political views that he felt that he needed to side more with Henry Clay in the Whig party, more than with Andrew Jackson in the Democratic party. On his return in December from England with his family, he discovered that the Whigs had this time united upon General Harrison for their candidate, because he had the same kind of popular enthusiasm that had elected Jackson. Daniel Webster was offered the Secretary of State position and he accepted the office in President Harrisons administration, and soon showed himself to be able in negotiations as in other departments of statesmanship. The Webster-Ashburton Treaty, signed 9 August 1842, was negotiated by US Secretary of State Daniel Webster and Alexander Baring, first Lord Ashburton of Britain. Daniel Webster and Alexander Baring met in 1842 to establish a series of agreements on United States and British relations. This is a letter written from Ashburton to Webster, and he said, [9]â€Å"In short, I shall positively not outline this affair, if it is to be much prolonged. I had hoped that these gentlemen from the Northeast would be equally averse to this roasting. Could you not press them to come too the point and say whether we can or cannot agree? I do not see why I should be kept waiting while Maine and Massachusetts settle their accounts with the General Government. Pray save me from these profound politicians, for my nerves will not stand so much cunning wisdom. Ever my dear sir, yours sincerely† (Lewis, 316). The British and the Americans were back to the negotiating a treaty that would clearly establish boundaries, and avoid another call to arms like that in the War of 1812. The boundaries of Maine and New Brunswick were finally agreed to. Daniel Webster was opposed to the annexation of Texas and his fellow Whigs insisted that he should leave his cabinet. In May 1843, he did resign from his position, because he was against the annexation of Texas, the Mexican American War, and President Tyler’s political views. Webster returned to the Senate in 1845, and spoke out to the American people on how he felt was right and his views on the Mexican American War and the annexation of Texas. 10]â€Å"On May 13, 1846, war was declared. Webster was in New England for the installation of his friend Edward Everett as President of Harvard, and did not vote against the declaration of war, but he was opposed to it and was inclined to treat the situation lightly. † (Lewis, 348) Henry Clay introduced the Compromise of 1850, which was a series of five bills, the goal of the Compromise of 1850 was to deal with the spread of slavery territories to keep the northe rn interests and the southern interests into balance. Following the lead of senators Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas, Webster supported Clays plan to assure sectional balance in Congress. [11]â€Å"Clay’s bill contained several components. It would admit California as a free state. It provided for the organization of the remainder of the land acquired from Mexico as a result of the Mexican-American War into a new territory, called New Mexico, without determining whether slavery would be allowed there.

Metal Health by Quiet Riot free essay sample

Drums are one of the biggest aspects of heavy metal; although all aspects are highly important, drums are the biggest and Drew Forsyth knows how to bring his drums out to play for this album. They are subtle but you can feel the passion. The guitar solo in â€Å"Let’s Get Crazy† (track 9) is to die for, it’s edgy and a lot of fun to air guitar along with. Kevin DuBrow has a very unique and distinct voice that will simply make you want to rock out all night long. He is the perfect amount of rasp and subtle screams; you can feel how into the song he is. The chapter, titled Death of a Prince, consists of exactly this; the slow, alone death of Don Fabrizio in a hotel room a few hours after arriving Palermo. The passage being analysed, however, more specifically summarizes his thoughts and feelings about himself and his life while dying. The extract, while and after reading it, is effectively rather haunting for the reader. One of the most obvious features of the overall mood and atmosphere of the passage is its evident morbidity. Throughout, the Prince tends to ask himself rhetorical questions and make cynical statements that give him a sense of helplessness, lost in bitter melancholy. Why, he wondered, did God not want anyone to die with their own face on? (5-6) is an example of this. The morbid sense of the passage is also depicted by the Princes reference to death as a game Its a rule of the game; hateful but formal (17). This proves to be paradoxical, as death, which is normally perceived negatively, would not usually be associated with a word that is conventionally positive (game). Other features that facilitate the clear morbidity of this passage is Tomasi di Lampedusas subtle use of adjectives such as funeral black (24), metallic sea (29) and dark water towards the abyss (53) to describe the Princes depressing perception of his surroundings, which also illustrate his current state of mind. Funeral Black not only serves as a simple description, but is also an example of the way the extract foreshows the ending of everything the Prince, Donnafugata, the novel. The use of the reference to the imminent end (48) also very apparently indicates conclusion. : An impression is also made that everything around him is fading, through descriptions such as tenacious memories (27), which doubly emphasizes the waning nature of the environment, the ghosts of the cockroaches (25), which triggers emptiness, and faint [ odour (26). This sombre, inevitable doom in the atmosphere is also portrayed through the claustrophobic account of the room. The suffocating (24) disposition, the heat, the prison stink (29); though these descriptions contrast with the initial empty feeling of the room, Tomasi di Lampedusas depiction of the stale and musty atmosphere overpower the emptiness. Having three days growth of beard (3), the Prince himself illustrates staleness. Images, olfactory and otherwise, of the mustiness of ill-dusted plush (25), the faint medicinal odour (26), and the stale and varied urine (27) add to this depressing and nauseating tone of the mood and atmosphere. Throughout, the Prince gives a strong impression of his isolation. Although it is not clearly stated, this feature is shown through the inseparability of ideas between the atmosphere of the passage and Prince Don Fabrizios state of mind. Tomasi di Lampedusa seems to have written the Chapter in such a way that the atmosphere and surroundings described are almost by the character of the Prince himself. This is briefly mentioned previously where the Princes perception is directly linked to his current situation. The morbid atmosphere adds to his morbid reminiscent state, where he thinks about death and decay through various ways. His self-decay, or weakness, is depicted through his helplessness as he feels he is unable to contravene (14) and that he is a prey of untameable currents (54) a victim of his circumstances. This is even despite his attempt to maintain composure immersed in that great outer silence, in that terrifying inner rumble (37). One interesting feature of this passage is the way the Prince bitterly makes ironic comparisons and contrasts of his current dying state to his previous healthy state. For example, to hold up a razor would have been like holding up his own desk, before (14-15), or he found that to give way to drowsiness now would be as absurd as eating a slice of cake immediately before a longed-for banquet (34-35), which indirectly contributes to the extracts resentful tone. When the Prince contemplates the downfall of everything around him, it is as if his life is flashing before his eyes, as he is remembering everything of significance to him. Another stereotype of death occurs when there is a blinding light (28) amongst the darkness of the atmosphere; this follows the stereotypical idea of walking into the light pre or post-death. Overall, the Princes state of mind seems to be depressed, bitter, weak, and reminiscent, which is easier to observe due to the state of the atmosphere and mood. As this passage is fairly significant, there are many themes and patterns evident. Towards the beginning, when the Prince is describing his physical self as one of those maniac Englishmen who amble around the vignettes in books by Jules Verne (3-4), he also adds that he is A Leopard in a very bad trim (5). This hints a pattern of animal imagery, which is used fairly often in the novel. This may also be thought as slightly paradoxical, as leopards, animals that are noble, gallant and dignified are rarely in bad trims. Though there is not a great deal, olfactory images definitely occur a few times as well when Tomasi di Lampedusa describes the mustiness of the room, which was mentioned earlier. As obvious however, the main theme of this passage that appears in the novel is the idea of death and decay. Because the whole gist of the extract is based on this theme, the idea is self-explanatory; the death of the Prince, the decay of his life and surroundings (Donnafugata). This is related to another theme that is found in the passage: the inevitability of change. This is depicted by his helplessness as he gives in to enforced camouflage (13) and relinquishes with the idea that Theyll shave [him] [ ] afterwards (17). Another unavoidable theme throughout the passage is the idea of the passing of time through death and aging. Similar to the theme of death and decay, this is also quite apparent as the aging of the Prince, Donnafugata, and his belongings is clear through his words; for example, old man (10), telescopes now destined to years of dust (41), exhausted body (51). A last but important theme that this extract illustrates is the concept of isolation and solitude. The Prince makes it very clear here that he is alone as he is not interrupted by personally close characters during the excerpt. He seems as if he is in his own little world of thoughts, which already makes him emotionally isolated. The reader can only know he is alone for certain though by the last line, He was alone, a shipwrecked man adrift on a raft (54). This passage of Chapter VII from The Leopard is very significant in depicting the various themes and writing styles of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa throughout the novel. The strong atmosphere and mood of the extract strongly facilitates the depiction of Prince Don Fabrizios state of mind. The contrast of his behaviour and thinking in this passage and chapter to his behaviour and thinking throughout the rest of the novel makes this extract very interesting to analyse. However what inclines to be the most evocative feature in the overall passage is Tomasi di Lampedusas ability to express the protagonists subjective, bitter views through his own objective narration. The effect of Chapter VII is thus a lasting one.

And that plan took America into the worst economic crises since the Great Depression. In his speech Obama uses logos by appealing to the audience sense. We see this in his speech when he talks about voting† Don’t boo vote. (Applause.) Vote. That’s the way to show your opinion, is to vote† This is a clear example of logos because he clearly appeals to the sense of the audience. By appealing to the sense of the audience, Obama succeeds in getting his message out; that it is important that you vote, instead of just complaining about the other parties view. He is telling that the only way you can get your opinion out, is to vote. A little later in Obama’s speech, he appeals to the audience sense again, we see this in his speech when he talks about the symptoms of romnesia, and tells what the cure is.†But, Denver, I want you to know this: If you feel any symptoms coming on†¦ There’s a cure, Colorado, as long as you vote. (Applause.) Ther e’s a cure.† This is an example of logos because; Obama is again appealing to the audience sense that they need to vote for him. By appealing to the audience Obama achieves, to make sure that they know that he is the cure for Romnesia. By the word Romnesia, Obama uses the term pun; this helps him to create a negative feeling of the work, when you compare it to his own healthcare package â€Å"Obamacare†, with this term he also uses a pun just in a positive way, which creates a good feeling about the word. But the most important part of this quote is, that he makes sure that the audience, see him as the cure. You can say that he is using logos and pathos in this quote, because he is also trying to reach out after the audience emotions. During president Obama’s speech he uses a lot of different terms, the two I have concentrated about is pathos and logos. I find these two terms very important, because it helps him construct a good flowing speech, while he also gets the audience or the ones watching it in TV to agree with him, that’s how he uses pathos. For the once who isn’t sure of what they are going to vote or if they are going to vote, here he uses logos to reach out to the sense audience and tries to help them decide on voting for him.

The Impact of the Computer on Writing In 1999 my family purchased their very first computer. A few days after, we were connected to the World Wide Web. All of my friends had been online for years prior so it was a big deal to finally have it. Since then, the way that I communicate has changed drastically. Everything from the way that I talk to my friends to the way that I pay my bills is now done online, instead of the traditional way. The internet has offered so much change to society. Some people are still without it, and as I think about it, I wonder how they are surviving. It seems that most everything I do is related to this machine in some way. I e-mail, pay my bills, instant message, buy material items, research, keep an online journal, and I even take classes on the web. Without it I would be a mess. Upon coming into college, I finally had access to high speed internet. By any standards it was awesome. It caused me to increase my use of the World Wide Web dramatically. I could not get enough of it. It was not long at all before AOL instant messenger was the newest addiction of my life. The thought of being able to talk to many people at once and so quickly was amazing. I was able to keep in touch with my friends who had moved across the country without having to pay a long distance bill. Who would complain at all the conveniences that it had to offer. With this program I was also introduced to a new way of writing. Let’s state the fact that people are lazy. When using any sort of instant messaging system there is a way to abbreviate everything. An example of this would be typing ‘ttyl’ instead of typing out ‘talk to you later.’ Another example would be simply putting ‘u’ meaning ‘you.’ There are so many of these shortened ways. These changes in writing also show up in e-mail. People seem to be very inclined to use the abbreviated ways of writing certain words or phrases when writing out e-mails. This is more in informal types of mail. I personally do not mind it to a point, but when it is used extensively it can be annoying and distractive. Also, much of the time, even the most basic of punctuation is forgotten or just not used.

Death by Landscape †Analysis Essay

Death by Landscape is a short story, written by Margaret Atwood in 1990. The Author is a Canadian novelist, poet and essayist as well as an environmental activist and feminist with many national and international awards for her writings and activities. She was born in Ottawa, Canada and started to write when she was six years old. At the age of 16 she already knew that she wants to become a professional writer. She grew up in the outback of northern Quebec, maybe that’s the reason for her love to nature and northern environments and this is what builds the frame of most of her works. The story was first published in 1991 and is a part of her short story collections. Death by Landscape describes the uneasy living with implanted guilt because of being accused of something what never happened or of just being at the wrong place to the wrong time. Margaret Atwood writes about an elderly woman, Lois, who lives in an apartment in Toronto (page1. block1). Lois brought her collection of paintings with her when she moved in this apartment from her former family house. These paintings are all landscapes of the Canadian outback and countryside with forests, trees, lakes and islands. Her husband Rob already died and her boys already grew up. She is living alone, alone with her memories, especially the memory to one particular happening in her youth when she grew up and went camping in a summer camp in Canada’s northern forests. She went to this camp â€Å"Manitou† since she was nine years old and since she was ten she had a special friend – Lucy – coming along to this summer camp with her. Lucy was from the United States, from Chicago, and she was brought to this summer Camp Manitou because her mother was Canadian and went also to this camp when she was young (p. ,bl. 3, par. 3/4). Her father who lost one eye in the war was American. When Lois was fourteen they went on a one week canoe trip which was Lois first- and her last one (p. 1, bl. 2). In this year – Atwood writes on page three block three – Lucy was different. She had different interests and did other things than in the past summer camps. Her father had a new wife, her mother a new husband. Lucy had a boyfriend who was sixteen and worked as a gardener’s assistant. She wasn’t happy with her stepfather and didn’t want to live with her father either. She wanted to run away from home (P. 3, bl. 3). When they left the camp to their canoe trip another character is introduced to the story. This is Cappie, the boss and the owner of Camp Manitou, who got the camp from her parents, and now – in the costume of an American native – sends the girls on their trip to the Canadian wilderness. Cappie wanted to be an Indian, adventurous and pure and aboriginal. The first two days of the canoe trip passed normally and nothing dangerous or spectacular happened. But then Atwood describes the third day on page 5 block one. They reached camp three â€Å"Little Birch† and Lois remembered any details of the happenings to the present day. Lois and her friend Lucy wanted to go on a lookout point, a cliff high above the water, to have a look at the view from there. On top of the cliff Lucy wanted to take a pee and Lois gave her some toilet paper. To give her privacy she walked away and let Lucy alone, just a few steps, just a few minutes. Lois heard Lucy shouting, no shout of fear, not a scream (page 6, block 1 at the end). When she returned to pick up her friend Lucy wasn’t there anymore. Lois got a shock and returned to the others. All searches remained unsuccessful. Lucy was gone and no one knows where she was, there was no trace of her at all. They broke up their trip and returned to Camp Manitou. The Police was looking for Lucy with dogs but couldn’t find a trace. Because of the loss of a child the camp did not survive. It was closed later. Cappie had a last questioning with Lois and asked Lois what she had talked with Lucy before she had disappeared. Lois told her that Lucy talked about diving from the cliff but Lois answer was â€Å"you have to be nuts† (p. ,bl2). Then Cappie said, â€Å"sometimes we are angry and we don’t know it, we lose our temper†. She was accusing Lois of pushing Lucy off the cliff. This was unfair and hits the girl like a slap (p. 7,bl. 2). – Now Lois is an old woman living alone in her apartment and realizes that she lived all her life with a feeling of guilt implanted in her fourteen year old head by Cappie, the owner of the camp. Death by Landscape does not end at this point. Lois is looking at the paintings on her wall. In all her paintings she sees her friend Lucy and she still can hear her shouting. On page eight block one Atwood writes that a dead person is a body and occupies space, a grave, but Lucy has no body, no grave. She only exists in Lois’ mind and – in her pictures on the wall. â€Å"You can’t see her exactly, but she’s there†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (page 8, block 2). Everyone has to be somewhere and the paintings are where Lucy is. In Lois’ mind she is still alive. Lois was going through the happenings of this particular day again and again, throughout her life, torturing herself with guilt and never really finding peace. This feeling of guilt was implanted in her mind from the frustrated owner of Camp Manitou, knowing about the consequences of the loss of a child in her camp. Lois knew that she didn’t push Lucy off the cliff, but she left her alone, just for a moment, unattended and unwatched, knowing about her unhappy family situation, knowing Lucy didn’t want to return to her family (p. 5, bl. 2). When Lucy said that she didn’t want to go back to Chicago this indicates even possible thoughts of suicide. As an adult Lois was able to see this, but as a fourteen year old child, as a friend of Lucy†¦? Lois had to live with this guilt all her life. Cappie, the owner of Camp Manitou wanted to have a reason for the loss of her camp. She wanted to have somebody to blame. She got what she wanted, not for the press, not for the police, but for herself. Lois said â€Å"Ididn’t! on page 7 block 2 and Coppie answered â€Å"didn’t what Lois? † – push my friend†¦ – left my friend†¦ – hit my friend†¦ – we don’t know exactly what Lois didn’t do, but Cappie planted guilt in the teenagers head, guilt the little girl had to live with for the rest of her life. Cappie needed an excuse for her own failure. Atwood’s story is very thrilling, entertaining and exciting. There are actually two stories in one. The first one is the story of Lois, the old lady living in her apartment in Toronto, thinking of her past, of her entire life. She could hardly remember important things of her life, what her husband looked like, the birth of her boys, but one life changing event she remembered in all the details like it had happened yesterday. On the other hand is the story of the young Lois and the terrifying disappearance of her friend Lucy. There is a lot of foreshadowing in the story what makes the reader suggesting that something terrible might happen. On page one block two Atwood writes it was Lois first canoe trip and it was her last one. The reader can already imagine that something bad happens to her on this trip. Another example is to read on page three block three when Atwood writes that she – Lucy – wants to run away from home. Also Lucy herself indicates later in the story that she doesn’t want to return to Chicago and finally on the cliff she tells her friend that it would be quite a dive off here (p. 5,bl. at the end). Atwood also uses allusions in her story. On page one block two she describes the reason for Lois to buy all these landscape paintings . She wanted something that was in them, although she could not have said what it was at the time. At the end it was her friend Lucy whom she saw in all these paintings. On page three in block two the author writes that Lucy always had a surprise or two. Something to show, a marvel to reveal. The reader immediately wants to know what is it, what does she have to show? This makes the story so exciting and keeps the readers curiosity. Canadian children go to a summer camp sooner or later in their lives. It is a part of their education. Nature is never far in Canada. Therefore everything is intimate and familiar, nothing is really strange for a Canadian reader. When the kids hang their open food into the trees to save it from eventually appearing bears the Canadians can find themselves in the story. The major happening itself is something we can find in nearly every daily newspaper. Kids disappear, are missing, being killed or accidently die. Everybody can imagine the shock of the participators. To conclude the Death by Landscape Margarete Atwood drew a wonderful picture of her Canadian home country in a captivating story. Enhancing the reader she reminds the necessity of intact families, the taking care of growing up children and the unpredictable things that can happen. Also Atwood describes the terrifying feelings of guilt which can drive someone to delusion and madness. Lois never forgot her friend in all those years, she still hears her voice and sees her image in her landscape paintings. This gives her friend Lucy a place for her body which has never been found in the Canadian wilderness.

Smith Radiators, Inc. is undoubtedly one of the major players in the automobile industry, being a supplier of radiators to some major automobile suppliers. In fact, it supplies fifteen percent of the Auto of America, Inc. (AAI) demand for radiators in 1991, competing with five other major suppliers and some minor suppliers. On the side of Smith Radiators, AAI is their major customer. About thirty three million dollars of its sales during the early 90’s came from its partnership with AAI. Thus, Smith Radiators must take good care of the business partnership with AAI to maintain or further improve its financial stability. And this could be done if Smith Radiators could sustain and further improve the quality of its products and services. But a more challenging task appeared before Smith Radiators on April 20, 1991. AAI demands a major change to its company. Smith Radiators, being a partner of AAI for thirty years, is obviously affected by this. Due to recession, AAI decided to do some cost reduction but with sustainable quality improvement on its products and services and effective response to its customer needs. AAI will be shifting from its traditional way of purchasing supplies to the so-called just-in-time basis or the JIT. Some major changes using the JIT philosophy would be streamlined purchasing operations and few certified suppliers. On the part of Smith Radiators, this needs immediate attention. It cannot afford to lose its major customer. The president of Smith Radiators called for an emergency meeting with the company’s department heads to address the demands of AAI. Being a company that does not practice JIT that time, the president assumed that problems will arise upon adapting JIT onto their functional areas. Vice-presidents were asked to identify these problems. One of the vital areas to be taken in consideration is the workforce or the labor force. This is under the Human Resource Department. JIT would definitely affect the workforce. Currently, the recruitment process adapted by Smith Radiation is done by the so-called internal recruitment, wherein a prospective candidate will be recommended by a current employee. The candidates will undergo try-outs and interviews, and the successful candidates will be undergoing informal training with fellow workers and under the supervision of a foreman. The workers participate on this recruitment strategy because they earn some extra money if their recruits are accepted and could be able to work for two years in the company. With JIT, that would be a much different thing. The workers of Smith Radiators, like workers of other companies, also have their union. The union serves as the unified voice of the workers that answers, accepts, or contradicts issues that directly affect them. Even before the proposed JIT, the union has several conflicts with the management. The workers’ wage is in fact much lower relative to those working for competing companies. It is saddening that the workers agreed for this low wage for the sake of job security, which is a responsibility of the management. The management of Smith Radiators obviously takes advantage of this situation. They were able to save on their labor cost. On the other side, the job security is what’s important here, considering that most of the workers were high school drop-outs. Another issue is that women were not allowed to work in some of the areas, like those areas that use lead-based chemicals, where higher wage is given for the service. In my point of view, it is just right to ban women in this particular work, because their health will be at risk. This ban, I must say, is a commendable action of the Smith Radiators’ management. But the major concern of the union is that the company is overstaffed by twenty percent, and by the end of 1991, end of the workers’ contract, some of them might be laid off. As a result, workers were dissatisfied with their work. In fact, absenteeism became a habit to some or maybe majority of the workers. Considering all these issues or conflicts between the management and the workforce, it is expected that the vice-president for human resource spends most of his time dealing with the union’s concern, when in fact; some of his times could be used for brainstorming, structuring activities that could improve the working attitude and discipline among the workers. With the need to comply with the demand of AAI, Smith Radiation needs to do some changes especially on its management strategy. The goal is to get a certification to operate as AAI supplier, adapting JIT philosophy in their workplace. JIT depends on elimination of waste, total quality control, supplier participation, and employee’s participation on decision makings. The expected result of JIT would be shorter lead time in production, flexible manufacturing, reduced inventory, higher quality of products, and increased productivity. To be certified, four criteria must be met by Smith Radiation. First: quality of supplied parts. On the current system of Smith Radiators, considering the fact that the company does not provide formal training to their new worker, low quality of products will be produced. Generally, the company currently follows the defender type of strategy, wherein it stays in its comfort zones. Research shows that training and development are guaranteed to be needed at some point of the strategic growth process. And the current human resource department seems to overlook this aspect. But I appreciate the fact that the vice-president for human resource communicates with human resource officers from other companies that were able to practice JIT philosophy already. This is a good start. Smith Radiations could learn from the experiences of other companies and use these experiences as baseline for starting JIT. Second: frequent delivery. The AAI demands that two times per day will be the transfer of products from Smith Radiators. The vice-president for human resource might realize that he needs to train the workers work flexibly. Meaning, he must be multi-tasking for him to respond to sudden changes in the production schedule. This would be an effective move by Smith Radiators, wherein they could save from their labor cost, contrary to the current management practice where a worker is skilled only with a specific type of work. However, on the part of the workers, some of them might be laid off. The management may consider retaining only the most productive workers, and in return, providing them with better wages and development programs. But the good thing is that workers will be challenged to do better to retain their position. Third: reliability of delivery. Quality must come first. In JIT, the human resource department will train the workers to perform during critical decision makings. The worker must be able to inspect his own work. For example, during a process, if the worker sees that the product is out of specification, he can stop the whole process. And this could only be possible if the worker is fully knowledgeable with the basic technicalities of the process. On the part of the worker, this is a good opportunity not only to obtain a higher wage but opportunity to explore new knowledge and opportunity to practice responsibility. In addition to this quality issue and reliable delivery, the management, imploring JIT philosophy, discussions in round table as strategized by the vice-president of human resource is actually an effective way to obtain new ideas. This would be a perfect venue for the workers to communicate with their co-workers, supervisors, and if possible with the managers. These workers are the actual people that experience the process. They could have better ideas to explore changes in processes without sacrificing the quality of the products. The supervisor’s or foreman’s role on this part of the strategy would be to confirm the suggestions of the workers using scientific trials and experiments. Fourth: number of shipments received in exact quantities. Workers being multi-skilled, self-disciplined, group-oriented, and has good quantitative and diagnostic skills, there would be no doubt that Smith Radiators can comply with the demanded two shipments per day at ten radiators per shipment. Over-all, the strategy that is proposed by the vice-president for human resource comply with the goals of the company and supports the business strategy, the prospector business strategy, which aims to obtain certification, and in the long run, sustain its business partnership with AAI. The company, however, is expected to provide job security, fair wage, and respect to the workers. In essence, a strategy made by the human resource department must capture the â€Å"people element,† as it is called by an article in a reliable website, of what is intended to be achieved in the medium to a long run by an organization. Understanding Child Development through Observation Introduction: Background For observing and evaluating the child development, an online site is accessed where a nursery video is available and in the video the child that I chose to observe is a four year old girl that I will refer to as Amani. She is highly intelligent and confident child; not only has this she had extraordinary skills to socially move around independently. I observe Amani in the school classroom; play area and garden area where she has been involved in different activity. This observation has been conducted between 9.23am until 11.09am of all her activities. The objective of this observation is to make the progressive note of the childs physical, intellectual, emotional, linguistic and social development. In the next section there is description of observation and followed by the evaluation and childs profile. Observation Description Amani stands near to table on which there are name tags of students, she leans to pick her names tag with a little hesitance and picks the tag and pastes it on the name board. During the time she has smile on her face and looks pleased with this activity. Later on she is in her classroom sitting on floor along with her all classmates, she is smiling and has her eyes on her teacher, and paying attention to what teacher is saying intently. She is constantly smiling and moving her body in swinging way. Now, teacher is singing a poem Mary and Amani is singing along with the teacher and continuously smiling with pleasure. Teacher is reading the students story about growing flower plants, teacher speaks of flower planting, that there are some seeds and Maule! You will plant them and they will grow into a beautifulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦flower Amani says flower with the teacher. Teacher says Maule! She is standing by a large soil pot from where other children are getting the soil; she has a soil pot and tries to get the soil from one of a child standing closely. Second boy standing next to her has two scoops she tries to snatch the one because other boy is not letting her have the soil scoop. She snatches a scoop off the boy and cheerfully put some soil into the pot and says put some soil and it will make soil she picks a scoop and presses the soil inside the pot and says I am gonna show my soil and sits next to her teacher, she tries to take wax dough and laughs when her teacher refuses to g ive her the wax dough, teacher parts the dough and gives her half of the dough she smells it pleasingly and kneads it with her hand. Teacher says to her how does it feel? she says good. Teacher says how does it feel like? she says soft and cheerfully shifts the dough from hand to another. She says where is the stick to put it? and leaned forward to get the one and crushes an object on the table, the teacher exclaimed Oops! due sudden movement of Amani, she says she needs sticks and she hold the stick plate and put that near to her and picks the sticks one by one and put them in dough. Teacher says you could sing a song? she says yes and walks to the garden accompanied her teacher after finishing the wax dough, she puts the dough near to flower pots and waters the plants with the help of water shower. Now she is sitting in the garden party table and holding a spoon with plate and pretending to be eating with them. She gets up and leans forward to get another spoon and uses the spoon for picking sugar from the pot and pours into a tea cup and picks another pot, a milk pot and pour it into tea cup to make tea. She again pretends to be eating and her teacher says can you please make me a cup of tea, Maule!? she says with a smile yes, and puts sugar in the cup pleasingly, teacher says again what are you putting? she says with a smile I am putting sugar, and pretends to add more sugar into cup with spoon. She is on the garden party table and eating with spoon and drinking and says I have made it and get off the chair. Now she is in the class and standing next to her teacher who is sitting and singing a poem to children sitting on the floor. She sings the poem Mary with her teacher and classmates. According to Sheila Riddall-Leech (2005), observation is the most effective way to understand about the childs development stages, and its aim is to gather observation base information about a childs progress. Riddall-Leech (2005) further expresses that a single observation is not enough to determine whether or not a child is progressing and improving the developmental skills. Any observation should provide the data necessary to enable a professional to make balanced and informed decisions, such as the planning of specific activities to meet childrens needs, or whether to seek professional help. According to OHagan (2001), it is vital that parents are involved in the childs day to day activities in the school setting. In addition, the parents permission for observing child development is also important in the same regard. Evaluation Physical Development In physical development, Amani is observed for Development of Gross Motor Skills as well as Development of Fine Manipulative Skills (DeRobertis, 2008). Physically Amani is observed and found to be healthy and normal child since she continues to show physical activeness and physical involvement in every activity that a child of four year old is supposed to do such as walking, running, bending, carrying objects, and rolling. During observation, she is found to be physically comfortable of her environment like roaming around without any physical unbalance. She has shown almost all characteristics of Development of Gross Motor Skills. However, she has good physical balance yet at one point she shows lack of balance and co-ordination and control of body like leaning against the table and crushing other objects on the table. Another level of physical development observed is Development of Fine Manipulative Skills (DeRobertis, 2008). Just like every normal child of four year old Amani is ob served to able to using equipment, holding and gripping and drawing, writing and building. She is observed to feel, pouring, filling, touching and exploring dough and building another new object with it. She is observed to using objects like scoop and plant shower very efficiently and using spoon, dressing and using laces and ribbons. Intellectual Development Amani is intellectually observed remarkable as she shows intellect of mind and especially of knowledge and understanding. Both in classroom and play area she is observed as attentive, concentrated, understanding and learning child. The attention and concentration level is highly related to her responsive attitude. She shows some imagining and creativity too, working with wax dough and making cake and pudding of it. She is observed to have knowledge such as answering the teachers questions with her knowledge and writing her own name. The most important intellectuality observed in the Amani is her problem solving tendency such as wearing apron and tying the apron laces herself that shows her intense ability to show problem solving attitude. The sensing and concept formation of Amani is observed in play area where she makes pudding with wax dough, where she is asked about the wax and she responds correctly of the question that wax is soft and it shows great understanding and conceptuali zation of the girl. She seems to show good memory like sugar is added in tea and how to use the eating objects. Her understanding and recognition of objects and colors is extraordinary; she seems to differentiate between a light shade of green and vice versa. Since children learn language and other things by asking questions such as what, where, why, there has been lack of asking questions by Amani, and she intends to respond to the questions rather. Emotional Development Emotionally Amani is observed to be independent as she is able to walk around freely without any hesitation. Moreover, there is no hesitation or difficulty in her expression. She is expressive and good at expressing herself. However, she shows little lack of control over her emotions like when she is in her play area to plant a seed in soil she snatched the scoop from her classmate who refuses to hand her that scoop, though there is not any intense situation yet she looks little out of control of her emotions. Besides, she shows a good emotional balance towards her classmates, she seems to show warm towards her classmate. Facial expression is observed as maturely because she intends to smile all the time whenever she is amused to show her pleasure. She continues to responds the teacher apparently pleasantly and in expressive way. She seems to show good interaction with others but little direct eye contact is observed. The overall body movement and body posture is simply frequently wi thout any hesitancy and normally active and responsive. Tone of voice and play attitude is observed as interactive and sociable involvement. There is such as no sudden change in behavior or language tone. Linguistic Development Amani is observed to have language skills of the level of four year old child. She seems to express herself rather using language. In addition, she is observed to use short sentences and no difficulties and hesitation in speaking. Since language development of child depends on its cognitive skills and Amanis cognitive skills is observed as functioning and efficient, her language fluency and efficiency is improved and better than other children in the classroom. The selection of words and fluency in the speaking is extraordinary good with correct use of tense. Social Development However, Amani is observed as an active, balanced and interactive child yet it has been observed that she has very little double-sided interaction with her classmates. She is observed to interact with her teacher but little is observed her interaction with her classmates. She seems to look warmly and positively but she does not show a productive and cooperative interaction; for example, at one point, she rather snatches the scoop from her classmate rather than making a polite request she seems to behave a little intense. Since, a child of 3 or 4 year is capable of waiting of his/her turn and in normal situation can share and cooperate with fellows (Kail, 2007) therefore it was a little surprising aspect of her because she seems to behave normally so far in other development. In addition, social roles and social behavior like learning appropriately and respond to other is observed normally. However, she seems to enjoy being in classroom with other classmates and enjoy the social appea rance. In regard to other social skills like dressing and moving around without any help and doing different activities she is observed doing them independently. She seems to show a parallel social playing behavior like playing alongside but not with another child, not very much interacting and talking to other children in her different activities. She has been observed as cooperative and with high self-esteem- valuing herself as a person and confident. She rather seems to appear a self-reliance person in social development point of view. Child Profile I observed the child thoroughly and assessed her physically, intellectually, emotionally, linguistically, and socially. The overall development of Amani is observed to be normal and healthy. She has shown normal tendency in all level of development including physical, intellectual, emotional, linguistic and social. However, physical development means doing movement either gross or large movement of limbs or fine manipulative movement of fingers (Grych Fincham, 2001). Amani is found to have large movement of her body and her finger by using pencils and writing. Because physical development mainly depends on the body growth and nervous system that sends message from the brain to body it demonstrates the muscles to motivate them to move. There is great relevance of physical development with intellectual development, because if a child physically not fit or shows problems like little movement, hesitation, and inactive, all these symptoms show inefficient intellectual development of chil d. Amani has been observed as physically active and responsive her intellectual and mental capacity can be assessed as normal and frequent. The intellectual development of Amani is found to be mentally active and interactive along with reasoning mind. She seems to understand the environment, the teachings taught in the classroom and questions asked; she seems to answer them intellectually. She is very attentive and concentrated girl along with ability to respond the external environment. She has good imagining, creative ability and problem solving attitude. Moreover, she possesses an ability to utilize conceptualization of her reality and creativity. Emotionally she is a well balanced child with independent attitude; she has got normal body posture, eye contact, language tone and unchanged behavior. Moreover, her body language and facial expressions are even and warm towards other mates. In linguistic development I observed that she has ability to use language to express her and the re is fluency in the way of her language. Socially she is active, balanced and inter-active child, she is warmly and positive towards interacting towards her mates. She has good learning skills as a social roles and social behavior like learning in a group appropriately. She is socially independent and warm and communicative and responsive. She is expressive, social, cooperative and sharing the things. She has got remarkable cognitive skills and memory power. Different social activities like eating, moving in group and responding; these are those abilities which are extraordinary brought on in her. Common child features of asking questions about the things that they do not know or do not understand, in Amanis case it are bit different in the way that she does not asking question but answering the question rather. Another thing that is important to conclude is her overpowering and strong and intense feeling about her movement. She is intelligent, cooperative, talkative, communicative , and furthermore, creative and imaginative with good self confidence. According to Gambrell (1994) the child who is motivated to learn has many reasons to read and it also includes knowledge gaining, on the other hand Amani is not observed for reading, which can prove her learning motivation. Nevertheless, she is motivated to learning and learning in group which is undermining part of her development.

Here Hitchcock indulged in nudity, bloodbaths, necrophilia, transvestism, schizophrenia, and a host of other taboos and got away with it, simply because he was Hitchcock. The great director clouded his intent and motives by reportedly stating that the entire film was nothing more than one huge joke. No one laughed. Instead they cringed in their seats, waiting for the next assault on their senses. The violence and bloodletting of PSYCHO may look tame to those who have grown up on Jason and Freddy Krueger, but no one had ever seen anything like it in 1960. Inspired by the life of the demented, cannibalistic Wisconsin killer Ed Gein (whose heinous acts would also inspire THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, 1974 and DERANGED, 1974), PSYCHO is probably Hitchcock's most gruesome and dark film. Its importance to its genre cannot be overestimated. PSYCHO's enduring influence comes not only from the Norman Bates character (who has since been reincarnated in a staggering variety of forms), but also from the psychological themes Hitchcock develops. Enhancing the sustained fright of this film are an excellent cast, from which the director coaxes extraordinary performances, and Bernard Herrmann's chilling score. Especially effective is the composer's so-called "murder music," high-pitched screeching sounds that flash across the viewer's consciousness as quickly as the killer's deadly knife. Bernard Herrmann achieved this effect by having a group of violinists frantically saw the same notes over and over again. Hitchcock really shocked Paramount when he demanded that he be allowed to film the sleazy, sensational novel that Robert Bloch based on the Gein killings. Bloch's subject matter and characters were a great departure from the sophisticated homicide and refined characters usually found in Hitchcock's films, but the filmmaker kept after the studio's front office until the executives relented. He was told, however, that he would have to shoot the film on an extremely limited budget—no more than $800,000. Surprisingly, Hitchcock accepted the budget restrictions and went a... ...ces, nor was it a great performance or their enjoyment of the novel. They were aroused by pure film. That's why I take pride in the fact that PSYCHO, more than any of my other pictures, is a film that belongs to filmmakers." This was no news to Hitchcock's fans. In a 1947 press conference the great director laid out his philosophy of the mystery-horror genre: "I am to provide the public with beneficial shocks. Civilization has become so protective that we're no longer able to get our goose bumps instinctively. The only way to remove the numbness and revive our moral equilibrium is to use artificial means to bring about the shock. The best way to achieve that, it seems to me, is through a movie." PSYCHO provided shocks heard around the world and became an instant smash, breaking all box-office records in its initial release. Hitchcock had a horselaugh on the Paramount executives who wanted no part of PSYCHO from the beginning. The film became one of Paramount's largest grossing pictures and it made Hitchcock not only a master of the modern horror film but also fabulously wealthy. He had outwitted everyone—the industry, the audience, and the critics.
